The Meaning of a Miracle

Sep 20, 2026  •  Fr. Hunter Van Wagenen

What does a miracle actually mean? It is easy to either reduce a miracle to a historical curiosity or dismiss it as a moral fable, but this sermon challenges us to hold both the reality of the event and the depth of its meaning together. Drawing on the wisdom of St. Augustine, we are invited to see the raising of the widow's son in Luke 7 not merely as a remarkable moment in history, but as a living picture of what Christ does for souls trapped in sin and death. The widow and her son represent helplessness at its most complete, and yet Jesus meets them right there, moved in His body by compassion, and speaks life where there was only death. The miracle is not just something that happened long ago in a village called Nain. It is a portrait of what repentance looks like for those of us whose sins have become visible to the people around us. When death is public, restoration must be public too. That means naming what we have done, going to the people we have hurt, and allowing others into the places where we need healing. This is not a message of shame but of extraordinary hope. Christ came to us. He always comes to us.
