Behold, You Are Beautiful: Believing in God's Delight

What if the deepest problem in our spiritual lives is not that we sin too much, but that we believe we are loved too little? This sermon draws us into the poetry of the Song of Songs to explore one of the most radical claims of the Christian faith: that God does not merely tolerate us, but genuinely delights in us. The lover's repeated declaration -- 'Behold, you are beautiful' -- is not accidental repetition. It reflects a profound truth about the human heart. The walls of shame, insecurity, and self-contempt we build around ourselves do not fall with a single word. They are dismantled slowly, through patient, persistent love. We are invited to consider how the rhythms of Christian worship -- baptism, the Eucharist, the weekly gathering -- are themselves the repeated voice of a God who keeps saying, again and again, that we are beloved. This is not cheap comfort. It is the foundation of genuine holiness. When we begin to believe we are truly delighted in, something in us is freed to become what we were always meant to be.
